“Follow your passion, be prepared to work hard and sacrifice, and, above all, don’t let anyone limit your dreams.” Donovan Bailey, Olympic Athlete
As your blog or business gets increasingly visible, the naysayers will come out of the woodworks.
When I first learned what some of my so called friends and family members really felt about my business, I was furious. My first thought was, “How dare they say that and think that.”
I strongly believe that if you have a dream pursue it while you are able bodied. Whether that’s taking art classes to paint masterpieces, getting your photos displayed in a museum, starting a boutique business, starting a social media marketing business, go for it. Make it happen!
You see I am very proud of my business. I spent 2 decades of my life building other people’s dream. When the corporate world decided to lay me off despite my talents and skills, I turned that situation around to work independently. After my baby was born, I started working from home in 2012 for a variety of clients. I used that experience to create Aspiring Mompreneur, helping moms to build their dream businesses.
Imagine my shock when I learned what some of my family members really think about my business. I assumed that they would admire what I was doing – raising my daughter and building a business. Wrong!
Some of your friends and family members are going to judge you. They have opinions about how to run your life. They may even gossip about you behind your back. At the end of the day, you are in control over how you react to the negative words they throw your way.
To my fellow entrepreneurs and the brave souls who have chosen to take action and pursue your dreams, don’t let the the nasty words of naysayers get you down and deter the work you’re doing. Use it as fuel to propel you forward!
Your destiny is in your hands. The world needs you and your unique gifts and talents!
The negative words from friends and family members hurt. After all they are supposed to love you just the way you are. That includes supporting you in your dreams and endeavors. It’s not about you. It’s about them and their insecurities.
What are you supposed to do? Here are 3 tips for moving forward:
Process Your Feelings
Stay in touch with the variations of emotions you feel upon hearing the negative words. Suppressing your emotions and assuming a “stiff upper lip” will only worsen matters, as those emotions will show up in other ways – snapping at your child, doing a livestream nervous, anger, self-doubt etc..
So if you need to scream, find a quiet spot and scream. If you need to cry, then cry. If you need to vent to a girlfriend, vent. If you need to run on the treadmill, do it. Do what it takes to process the emotions in the moment. Then put the event behind you and move forward.
Keep Your Vision In Front of You Daily
Before you start your workday, take the time to refer to your vision and the reasons why you started your blog or business. If you have not written down your business vision, your core values, and why you started your business, write it down now!
Reading your vision daily will help you to stay focused on the activities in your business that really matter. When things go wrong in your business, your vision will give you the fuel you need to persevere. Same thing when so called friends and family members bad mouth your business.
Take Massive Action & Build Your Empire
Business bashing from so called friends and relatives is a blessing in disguise. You can take all these negative emotions and convert them to emotions of grit and determination to write the best blog post of your life, to create that product or service your ideal customers will rave about. To build that business that will take you out of the dreaded 8 to 5 forever.
Going through all kinds of hell in my 20s and 30s taught me that I have nothing to lose through working very hard to re-build my life and pursue my dreams and passion. In a fast paced world where technology is eliminating thousands and thousands of jobs, you have everything to gain through building a lucrative blog and business. You can’t automate hand made art, jewelry, clothing, consulting, and coaching services.
Through persevering and building your dream empire and not giving up, you are giving your children the best gift possible – the inspiration to work really hard to build their dream life.
